What a whirlwind! I'm just now getting my computer open and logged in long enough to tell you all about Spring Fest and what I've been up to in the studio!
I spent the next day, Thursday, rehearsing with Nikki and Jason, brushing up on the old tunes and learning some of the new ones of their brand spankin' album, Out From The Harbor. Friday we played an early evening set to the bustling Music Hall. The sound was perfect. The songs: captivating. The three part harmonies were soaring and Jason's guitar solos were on fire! If you haven't checked out Nikki Talley's music yet, do yourself a favor and do it now. (Click here, buy her album then come back and finish reading this, I'll wait).
The rest of the weekend was filled with great music from stage and campground alike. I got to see a lot of old Asheville buddies and play and drink and sing until the morning. Truly a wonderful way to ring in Spring!
As if I couldn't have any more fun, I got home late Sunday night and jumped back into the studio on Monday. After three busy days last week Looney Bird is really starting to come to life! With every note, phrase, melody, each and every word and track everything is coming together! I finished up all my vocal, banjo and bass tracks. On top of that we layered on some spooky fiddle at the hands of Nate Lee. Jim Hurst added some beautifully mellow guitar to the album's only gospel song (written by Jon Weisberger and myself) and Preston Schmidt and Robert Trapp (Studio 31 West) did some pre-rough-mix-mixing! I really can't wait for you all to hear this album! Did I mention that yet? I can't wait for you all to hear this album!
Well, we've got a big day in the studio ahead of us tomorrow, so I best get back to it! Thanks for following along!
Thanks to each and every one of you who pre-ordered, shared and contributed to my KickStarter campaign! I'm so excited for you all to hear this album! Its going to be the best one yet! We spent a great couple days in the studio and cranked out a lot of songs. We're going to resume recording at the end of the month and hopefully have it all wrapped up by April! I really can't wait for you to hear this record! Here are some pictures from the process:
So many fantastic musicians are lending their skills to this project! So many more are going to walk through the studio door later this month. Everything is sounding so good and even the artwork is coming right along!
I'm too excited to even contain myself, so I'll leave you with these pictures and keep you updated all along the road to bringing Looney Bird into your lives!
I launched my first ever KickStarter campaign today! If you know what I'm talking about then you know whats coming over the next 30 days. If not, I'll tell you!
KickStarter is a crowd funding website. Its a platform where creators (me) ask you, (the music lover, consumer, random web browser...) for money to fund a project. I know you work hard for your money might not want to just throw it at random projects, so what I'm mainly looking for is pre-sales. If you would like an album, just go ahead and buy it in advance. If you feel like giving more (bless you) there are lots of fun and interesting rewards for doing so. The bottom line is that every dollar helps and I really can't do it with out you! So, if you will, check out the project and share it with your friends. Thank you!
About this project:
Its been roughly five years since I’ve released an album. that's right, five years. If my absence of recording were a child it would be in kindergarten.
A lot has happened during that seemingly great lapse of time. I uprooted my life in North Carolina. I loaded everything I needed (cat and dog included) into my van and moved to Nashville, where I proceeded to live in said van lurking about in parking lots, parks, neighborhoods and neighborhood bars before eventually moving indoors.
I’ve played with tons of bands, including bluegrass legend, Charlie Sizemore, had a song on the IBMA ballot, hiked for thirty days on the Appalachian Trail with my mom, welcomed a niece and two nephews into the world, said goodbye to my Grandma Haley, the woman who taught me so many things (how to hammer a nail and tie my shoes to name a few), all while ever continuing to let melodies and lyrics flow into and out of my head.
The songs selected for this recording reflect some of these themes, but these themes -change, restlessness, love, adventure, heartbreak, loss, success, dreams, memory- aren’t specific to me, but to the human experience. Therefore, I’m excited to bring these songs, these themes, to life and into your hands.
One of the best things about Nashville is being surrounded by amazing musicians and getting to call them my friends! Which is why I’m elated to have some of my greatest and most talented friends involved in this project! One of my favorite musicians and people, Jim Hurst, is helping me produce this album and a whole slew of fantastic musicians lined up! I'll be posting tons of updates as the project continues! I can tell you one thing: you certainly won't be disappointed with the musicianship on this album!
Every year I have put off making an album. I kept waiting for that magical day when I would be able to afford another project. Waiting for the illustrious Money Stork to fly over my bed one night and drop a beautiful little bundle of cash with which to make my next album. All the while, the songs kept piling up. I realized that there is no Money Stork and it was time to call on you! If everyone who wants a copy of Looney Bird for their very own buys it in advance, I will be able to make it happen! Come on now, be my Money Stork!
I have enough cash to get this project started but I won’t be able to get it into your hands without your help! So please, pre-order and share, share, share! Every little bit helps a lot!
If you feel like pre-ordering, follow this link:
Click on the desired reward and amount ($25 gets you a digital download before the album is out and a signed copy of the actual album when its all done), and kickstarter will walk you through the rest from there.
Thank you all for your continued support!
Thats right, folks. I'm making another record! Finally!
I'll share more with you once I get a few more of my ducks in a row, but the plan is to start recording, and soon! I've got the opportunity to work with some exceptional artists, who in addition to being fantastic talents are also some of my favorite people! I can hardly wait to tell you who, but to keep the suspense, wait I will.
What I can tell you is that the album will be recorded here in Nashville, will be jam packed with original songs, and will be released this spring! I'll be launching a KickStarter to fund this project and I cannot do it without you! Every pre-order will get me closer to my goal of putting the music into your hands (and ears).
I hope 2015 is your best year yet! I'm going to try my hardest to make it mine!
Hello friends! This is gonna be a blast and its also the last show of 2014! I'm so glad that the last show of the year is going to be with my sister, Jessica Weatherly! We're gonna be singing all of our old favorites, and some brand new songs! You might even catch us singing one by The Boss. You'll have to be there to find out which one!
I'm looking forward to spending the rest of this year hanging out in Colorado with my family, looking at the mountains and maybe going snowshoeing. You know, just being a Colorado girl in Colorado before heading back to Tennessee. Look for some new shows on the Shows page over the next little while. Gonna be some fun ones in 2015! And don't forget to visit the Store to pick up some last minute Christmas presents!
Hey everyone! Happy turkey day and happy December! I can hardly believe its December again, but I find myself thinking that every year. The shows in Colorado are going fantastic! Great pickin' and singing thanks to Aaron McClouskey, Jessica Weatherly and David Richey! I'm really looking forward to playing a Caudill Sisters show tomorrow at O'dell Brewing Co, one of my all time favorite breweries. In the spirit of sisters, here's a little recording of Jess and I singing one of the tunes from my November Song Challenge. Its called Loony Bird and I wrote it with my old friend, Jess Ross from Austin Texas! Enjoy!
I've also got a few workshops coming up and there's still time to sign up for one! Visit the shows page to find out more information about those and other upcoming shows!
Also, if you're still searching for the perfect Christmas present visit the music page and order some music. Or if you feel so inclined download the digital single Colorado Christmas Eve to enjoy again and again throughout the holiday season! Get that here!
Stay warm and be merry!
This is coming up pretty soon. Can't wait to be surrounded by family and snow and music and you!
In other news here is the latest episode of my video blog. I've shared one of my songs from the November song challenge. I hope you like it and I'll be sure to post another one in the future!
Thanks for watching and see ya soon!
Its important to challenge yourself if you want to grow. So this November I'll be doing a Songwriting Challenge! The idea is to write a song every day for the whole entire month of November. I usually write a lot, but its rare that I'll finish a song in one day. I'll usually obsess over it, mess with it and tweek it for a while until I'm relatively satisfied that it is indeed done. I'm hoping this challenge will help me to get into my creative space more often, and more quickly than usual. I'm excited to line all the songs up back to back and assess them when the month is up and see if I made improvements and grown or if I just churned out a bunch of songs that are half done that I don't really like. Either way, it will have been a success to follow through with the challenge for the entire month.
In the spirit of challenging one's self, I now challenge all of you to try something that pushes your limits a little this month. Be it something creative, something physical, job related, relationship based or anything else! Get out there and grow with me, folks!
I'm going to be adding some show dates for December in Colorado, so keep an eye out for those and happy November to ya!
A little update from Magnolia Festival in Live Oak Florida. Had a blast playing with Nikki and Jason! Maybe see you sooner than later, Florida folks!
Thanks for watching!
